What is PCOS?

Let me start by saying thank you for taking the time to read this and that I hope by the end of this article you will have gained a better understanding of PCOS and why PamBam Organics was created.

PCOS is shorthand for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome – A hormonal imbalance affecting 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. Specifically, an imbalance of reproductive hormones that can cause missed and/or irregular menstrual periods leading possibly to infertility and cysts forming on the ovaries.

PCOS symptoms can include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Excessive hair on the face, chin and other parts of the body
  • Acne
  • Insulin resistance
  • Thinning hair or hair loss male-pattern baldness
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Darkening of the skin and skin tags

……so all the fun stuff!

It is not 100% known what causes PCOS but studies have found that genetics and the environment around you can play a contributing role. Having high levels of androgens (a   group of hormones that play a role in male traits and reproductive activity) and high levels of insulin have also been found to play a part.

My Story

What has helped me in this frustrating journey, living with PCOS, is changing the environment around me. I had to learn about the foods I could eat, beauty products to apply and cleaning supplies to use that wouldn’t add to the problem. It was hard making these changes and a real battle of wills to either accept medication for the foreseeable future or try this and hopefully alleviate some of the more sever issues PCOS brings.

As I write this, I know some of you out there are struggling – with the bloating and lack of energy; our skin flaring up unexpectantly and just feeling downright rotten – but we need to act to help ourselves. I educated myself on what was good and bad for PCOS and then set about changing my environment. I grabbed a garbage bag and went through my kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and laundry to take back control. When the dust had settled on my gutted home, I came to realize how much toxic product I had surrounded myself with and how easy it is to fall into the marketing trap of ‘big business’.

I created PamBam Organics because I wanted to help others like me, who suffer silently whilst putting a brave face on – to at least look after one part of the picture for you – what we put on our skin. Unnatural was out; fragrance was out; toxic chemicals were out and what I’m left to create with is the bounty mother nature provides – and that’s what I did.
